Avoid late-night check-ins…

Terrible check-in, apparantly Mariott Downtown Philly only has one rep on duty after 11pm…I had to wait 25 minutes to get serviced, which took another 10 minutes to complete…not what you want to experience after 19 hrs travelling :-( Then I was allocated a room in the head tower…not easy to find, lots of walking … room was fine though; but the free bonvoy wifi not suitable for Teams meetings… Lots of potential for improvement … after all, a Marriott Downtown hotel should be able to do better…

We loved the hotel, amenities, and room. The housekeeping staff was beyond amazing. Unfortunately this was all tainted by an incredibly rude worker in the market in the lobby. I had made a purchase and realized that I didn't get a spoon. I approached the cashier to ask for a spoon and another worker yelled at me that there was a line to order. I told him I only needed a spoon for my purchase. He told me I needed to get back in the line that was over 20 people long to get a spoon. Everyone in the store was staring at me so I left. The employee at the host stand at the bar/ restaurant area was happy to help me find a spoon, but I was surprised by the employee's rudeness.

The facility was nice and clean and the location was great for the plans we had. We were looking forward to using the pool, but it was absolutely freezing cold. We didn't make it past our ankles. I know other families couldn't get in either. Others toughed it out, but you know it's cold when the kids won't even get in. Otherwise, it was a great stay.

Room was not ready at 4pm. I had to ask if there was an alternate available. This option was not offered. We were a party of 3 on a suite. The pull out was not made up. Did they think we were all going to sleep in one bed? It took 15 minutes to get change for a $20 from the front desk. Very inefficient. The room was very nice and housekeeping was very pleasant.

Our sheets were less than pristine the first night. The maid did not clean our room the following morning until after 4pm so the planned before dinner nap that I’m used to went out through the window. We went to sit in the lounge bar and no one ever came over to take a drinks or eats order in the almost two hours we sat there. They just walked by and serviced other tables. Default should be to offer service. I am loyal to the Marriott brand and a Bon Voy member, but I will not stay at this particular property again. It is a sprawling property and more suited for large group event travelers. The staff I did encounter were very nice and the reception staff member at check in was helpful and delightful . What is largely outside of the hotel’s control is the huge number of homeless and seemingly mentally afflicted people loitering near the hotel door, particularly the side entrance on 13th street. Very unsafe. Could do with a security guard , and from the city’s perspective a regular police presence in the vicinity .

Everything was ok besides the uncontrollable noise and activities in the lobby area . Check in and out was very busy as well. Valet parking was full . Our room and upstairs was clean and quiet.

This hotel is situated in a great area, across from Reading Market and everything is conveniently at walking distance. I would've given overall 5 stars but our room was adjacent to the elevator shaft and literally heard the elevator going up and down. Good thing we only stayed for two nights, and when I complained about the room noise situation, the only answer that was provided to me was that I should've asked for a quieter room when I first checked in? Like really...? The elevator shaft noise is an option that you have to let the staff know that you don't want when you check in. C'mon Marriott you can do better.
