Great location and breakfast, but elevator issues made things tough. No apologies were given to guests or even updates. We just walked to the elevator one night after being there, broken. Never reopened.
The Apex Grassmarket Hotel has a lot going for it. The breakfast was very good, with plenty of choices to start the day, and the location is excellent—close to everything you’d want to see in the city. We had a castle view room and it was very pretty.
Unfortunately, during our stay one of the only two elevators broke down. With hundreds of guests relying on a single lift, wait times stretched over 15 minutes. This was especially hard for elderly guests, those with luggage, anyone with ADA needs, and honestly anyone who just needed a break after a long day of walking around Edinburgh.
On the housekeeping side, the weekend cleaner was wonderful—super sweet and personable. During the week, however, the woman assigned to our floor spent every morning asking if we really needed our room cleaned. I understand she had a lot on her plate, but part of being on vacation (and paying quite a bit for it) is not having to make your own bed or feel guilty for wanting fresh towels.
Overall, the hotel has great potential, but the elevator issue and inconsistent housekeeping really affected our stay.
