A really lovely, large traditional hotel. All the communal areas such as the bar and dining room are beautifully decorated with historical details. Room was spacious and comfortable. Good quality breakfast buffet was included. Staff attentive, professional yet friendly. An easy walk to shops and restaurants but tucked away up a quiet street on the edge of the town centre. Overall very impressed. Hope to return.
This is a yester-year classic hotel - sort of from the 1920- 30s when Agatha Christie stayed there. The best thing is the location, frontage and breakfast buffet in a large classical dining room. Don't have dinner in that dining room. The young women were sweet but need training and the food and wine was disappointing and overpriced. They should convert the library or library lounge into a small dining room. The bar was too large and cool to use. The entire place needs an update, like the White Hart and the Fat Badger. ... Nevertheless, a graet place to have a company away day or a small conference.
Great location lovely hotel. However the room I was given had no opening windows and for me for a 9 night stay was unbearable! (I have to have fresh air when I sleep!)But thank you to the delightful Peter , the porter could see I wasn’t happy and without me even aware had sorted another room for me 😊. I was so grateful. He was so helpful and incredibly kind.
we arrived about 8pm and was allocated a very small and noisy room - next to the hall fire doors which banged closed all evening/night and near the boiler which hummed very loudly all evening and during the night. there was only one chair in the room or no soap dispenser over the bath/shower so did not shower that night. the next morning we found the only soap dispenser empty. so we phoned reception and asked for some soap. this was at 7am and was told housekeeping did not start until 8.30 am. they had no soap in reception. so we asked to be moved to another room so we could have a shower. the receptionist at first said that there was no other room available - hotel was fully booked. she then rang back and said there had been a no show. so we had to pack up and move to the new room which was luckily on the same floor. the new room was lovely. it had 2 chairs! was much bigger than the one we had just left, separate shower and bath and full soap dispensers. we went down to breakfast to be ignored by the waitress - we had to ask for coffee. that was the last straw. so we decided to make a complaint. we spoke to housekeeping as them manager was not available. we told them we were very disappointed with our stay at the hotel. they were very supportive and said they would report back to the manager. we asked for the manager to phone us to discuss this matter. this was two weeks ago. no one has phoned us to discuss our complaint, hence this feedback. 4* stay?
the hotel was good in its way but although they allow dogs you are ostracized for having one. They dispatch you to the corner of the bar to eat and they promptly forget you are there. I thought the hotel was not particularly welcoming. The first night we were there, we ate dinner at the hotel ( corner of the bar again), the price of a burger and a small portion of meat was extremely high. The presentation of the menu itself not what you expect from a decent hotel. Two tatty A4 paper stapled together was not my idea of a good presentation. All these little details are what makes a hotel exceptional and the Old Swan was not.
On check in arrival we were asked to pay for our room again ( already paid online ) to which I doubted myself and actually approved the second payment but then doubled checked my booking.
Our room was small & the bed was awful , I know this is an old building but there was around 3” of crossfall on our room and felt like we were in the funhouse at Blackpool.
Breakfast was nice and that’s about it.
My wife and I are 80 . Wife has a spinal injury so the ability to dine where we stay is vital.
Booked dinner for 6-30 online at same time as online check in.
Upon arrival was told dining was full. No thought given to informing us beforehand.
Bad manners which means we will never return.
Lovely location. Young staff in restaurant attentive and friendly. Good breakfast.
Hotel itself very dated. Needs a complete upgrade. Noisy pipes. Cold bedroom.
Price paid does not reflect this.
