No responses to messages prior to arrival to ensure we could get a wheelchair accessible room. On arrival, the only wheelchair access was up an incredibly steep slope to a door that will not remain open, making access very difficult. Check-in was cursory and we were only asked about parking so that they could charge us £12 per night to park up a hill away from the hotel, as the hotel's 4 blue badge spaces were always full. We were not asked about assistance in the event of an emergency, which is as a minimum standard best practice for wheelchair-using guests. The room was unbearably hot, and the windows in the bedroom and bathroom would not stay open unless wedged. The bathroom window mechanism in particular was broken and obviously had not been maintained. Same could be said for the rest of the tiny en-suite, which everything had been crammed into with no thought as to how one would use it. The soap dispenser was so high off the ground that even being 6 foot tall it was awkward to use. Add to this the smell of drains, and you can get the picture. To top it all off, the lift was broken on the last day of our 2 day stay and we were forced to use the staff elevator to get to and from our room. This hotel is living off the vapours of the memory of Agatha Christie, but it's rested on its laurels and is instead in dire need of renovation and improvements.

Lovely old hotel, faded elegance. Needs a refresh, weeds growing out of gutters. The lift soon went out of action, not a problem for us but difficult for elderly and infirm residents. Near the ballroom the glass roof had lots of serious cracks and smelt of damp. Loads of space in the car park. These are observations not criticisms. We did enjoy our stay.

This is a grand annd old fashioned hotel. Staff are friendly, the food was pretty good (we ate at the restaurant one evening). My main criticism was that it was quite draftyThere’s lots of onsite parking, which is charged at £12 per night.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The reviews I’ve read do not reflect the value for money. The breakfast was nice. The dining room was airy and not jam packed. I had a single room which was pleasant and clean. There are some particularly nice snug areas downstairs for chilling with friends. I’d go back again. Excellent value for money and good location.

Staff were very nice and attentive. The hotel was clean, tidy and for the most part, well presented. When I searched for a hotel, I applied the filter for free parking. This is not the case with this hotel as I was charged extra for parking. I can only comment on the room I stayed in but it was quite dated. Windows wouldn't stay open and huge flakes of paint pealing off the radiators exposing old paint underneath. Breakfast: A great selection but the cooked items had sat under the heat lamps for far to long and were hard and chewy. The continental items were also a good selection and much more palatable. The hotel is perfectly located, being a short walk from anywhere you might like to go or see in Harrogate. I would stay again but I'd avoid the cooked breakfast.

We arrived 2 hours early but were told our room was ready! On asking if there was a room we could upgrade to, we were given a Suite. Wow! it was fabulous and really changed our whole experience. The extra private sitting room was such a bonus and we made the most of it. Reception staff were welcoming and helpful and when we had drinks in the bar/lounge the barman was friendly and really efficient. We only booked one breakfast on the day we were checking out and, again, breakfast staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was plentiful with good choices whatever your requirements are. We've stayed here before and would definitely stay again.

There were positives and negatives to our stay. The public areas and bar area were welcoming, clean and well appointed. Staff were friendly and polite. While our room was clean and comfortable it was very much in need of a refurb. The bathroom was clean and functional but very tatty in places, especially the window area. Toiletries were provided, but as only product was a combined hand wash, body wash and shampoo they couldn’t be described as luxurious. Our main disappointment was when we were woken before 8am as workman were working on the unoccupied rooms along our corridor. This included removing the furniture into the corridor and taking up the carpets. We were not informed at check-in that the work was planned. The hotel is in a quiet area of Harrogate just 5 minutes walk into the town centre. Ample onsite parking although there is a £12/night charge.

Inside the lift is disgusting sadly. 50 years ago I lived and worked at the old swan as a silver service waitress. You have downgraded the service so is now 4 star. That was disappointing to witness. Breakfast was also a let down. No meats, no porridge, black pudding tasteless, eggs over cooked, croissants cold. Sadly I have to say breakfast was only just 3 star. Before arrival I rang to arrange to extend one of my rooms for one night. Reception said they would arrange it when we got there. Spoke with reception day after arrival and was told they could not extend. That left us with trying to find another hotel for my daughter. Finally I was shocked to see myself sharing the lift with decorators with paint all over their clothes. When I worked there such a thing was unheard of as the staff lift is sufficient for co tractors and staff.
