Booked through hotels.com but got there to find online images were of wrong/misleading room type. Did not like the room so refused it, Lauren on reception was exceptional and found us a better room (not the one we wanted) they were virtually fully booked. Grand hotel literally next door to train station easy walk and close to city centre.

The staff was excellent. The issue was with the room. It was not in very good condition for $275. Our room was located right above the train station, the overhead light was missing a lampshade, and the thermostat was stuck at 19C. We had to turn it off at some point. I would not stay there again for the price we paid.

The room was OK, but in the basement with a view of a large brick wall. The room had air conditioning, but the bathroom was cold. The room was long and thin, but perhaps a little tired. There was a conference room next door, and the door closed very loudly. Soundproofing between the room and the corridor was not good. The staff were friendly. Access to the room was by a lift. There was no stair.access. There was a fire escape indicated opposite the room, but IT WAS LOCKED, because it was "a staff area" we were told. The alternative fire escape seemed to be down a very long and winding service corridor. This made us a little apprehensive. Fortunately, there was no fire during our stay. The breakfast was good. The location, next to York railway station and near the city centre was excellent.

The staff were lovely and the hotel was very central but there were a few faults with the room. It was very dark as there was only very limited lighting and there was no where to hang clothes as there was a fridge in the cupboard that took up all the hanging space.

We upgraded to a suite, it was lovely but needed a bit of updating. Breakfast was good plenty of choice, staff were very nice especially on reception, overall a nice hotel but a little bit tired.
