8/10 Good

Pluses: the pool is a 10/10. Deep, large and well kept. The views are phenomenal and the outdoor patios and balconies really take full advantage of the views. The lunch bar is great. The staff was friendly and helpful. The grounds are well maintained and beautiful throughout.
Minuses: the interior needs a LOT of updating. It appears the last facility upgrade was in the mid 90s and while it is actively maintained the wear is obvious. Definitely needs new showers and new furnishings. Room amenities are few and feel more like 2 star than 4 star. The breakfast is mediocre compared to most hotels in this price point.
The hotel is at the top end of upper Positano and it's a substantial walk to get to shopping and most of the restaurants. Probably 20 minutes down to the beach and 30 minutes back for anyone with moderate to good cardio. The walk is not for older folks or young kids. That said, we stayed with our four teenage kids and they loved the pool and enjoyed the Hotel Royal. If you are staying in Positano on a family budget, its a good choice to stay, just be aware of the trade offs. Note the nearby restaurant of Ristorante C'Era Una Volta is an absolute gem and is the best bang for the buck food, service and views in Positano.
