A very unique space! A lot of cool spaces within the hotel, everything accessible right outside, including express and local trains up the East Side and West Side.

My friends and I each split rooms. The walls are very thin and we could hear each other talking. The AC did not work and because the room is small, it quickly became very humid and we happened to be staying during 80° weather. In order to get some air, we were left with no choice but to open the window, but given it’s NY, it was extremely loud to continue keeping the window open. Therefore, it was SO difficult to sleep at night. I figured there would be no point in calling maintenance since it was late at night already, we were leaving the next morning, and because I doubt it would be fixed immediately. Once I checked out, I asked for an itemized bill to be sent to my email. They asked for my email, gave it to them, told me it would be sent right away, and left. A few hours later (I’m already at JFK at this point), someone called to ask if I checked out because there was a note that said my belongings were still there. That was impossible since I had everything of mine with me… Disorganized. I asked them again since I was on the phone with them for my itemized bill to be emailed to me since I didn’t receive it. They told me they were never given an email. I don’t understand the lack of communication and the disorganization. Don’t be fooled by the photos and rooftop bar. Our stay here was moderate at best. I will not be coming back.

Freehand was a great place for my wife and I to stay on a short trip to NYC. The staff was excellent, the hotel was beautiful with interesting architecture, our room was comfortable and well appointed. The location was perfect for us, as were visiting our son in Gramercy. Would definitely recommend, and stay there again.

I took my 9 year old son here for the night for April break. It was magical. From the moment you enter you are greeted by the nicest staff. Check in was clear and easy. The accommodations were spectacular - imagine a bunk bed!! over a queen bed of your very own. The room was quiet - even close to the elevator. A delicious cafe and coffee shop await you in the lobby. Ms Pac Man! Walk to everything that you need. We will be back at least every year.

This property does not belong in conde naste top 50 for anything! The corridors are dismal, rooms tiny and bathrooms tiny closet tiny!!! Phone did not work during my stay , engineer came to fix thermostat and tried to fix the phone . He was very nice as was bellman named hero but otherwise awful hotel!

Prettier in the pictures. When I visited the neon Freehand sign was busted. The hallways and rooms were very dimly lit. The room had no view. And I was charged a resort fee for an onsite restaurant that was "closed for a private event" and a bar that was closed for the month.
